Admonition
My girls always talk
About their favorite color
And we are learning
About the seasons
How gardens
Grow
It seems a definition of self
To have a favorite
A safety
A wall
Against homogenous
Existence
My girls think I’m silly
When I say
I like all the colors
Almost the same
We are learning
That we need
All the seasons
My baby keeps waking
At 4 am
It’s not my favorite
But
I lay awake while she babbles
Smiles
Buries her sweet head
Into my chest
Like she’s digging
A well
I learn about bombs
On the internet
Someone thought of one
That can take the air from your lungs
Replace it
With fire
People
Are already
Turning each other in
We are blind
But wide eyed
We hear
Without listening
The world is weary
War torn and wasted
Easy prey
For
So many dragons
While my baby
Smothers herself
Back to sleep
I close my eyes
Breathe into what I believe
Will be a noble prayer
From a Mother’s heart
“Father,
Please
Grant me foresight.
Help me to see ahead.
Show me what’s to come.
So I can make a plan.
For my family.
Amen.”
Loretta sighs
I await my answer
My divine
Approval
My gift of eternal
Safety
God
Clears His throat
“The next time Athena asks for a bedtime story,
You drop what you’re doing and read her one.
There no work more important than her.
Raise your children.
Nurture them.
Teach them to love by how they are loved.
Teach them to seek Me.
That’s your most important job.
My job, is what’s ahead.
I’ll tell you.
When you need to know.
Put down the sight of others.
Rest.”
At 40 years old
I learned
The true meaning
Of admonition
So
I slept
Next to
One of my true treasures
I put bombs
To bed
Dreamed of celestial cities
With wandering gardens
A sweet succession
Of seasons
Endless
Libraries
In sunlit spaces
Filled with stories
Of three little girls
Who could slay dragons
