The Rescuers

I don’t get political

Because I think on some level

All politicians

Have to be full of crap to survive

The system

Sort of demands it

I didn’t vote for Obama

And despite his fancy speech making

I found him to be a great celebrity

But an unremarkable President

Most of them are

I didn’t weep when he got elected

I was happy for what the election represented

And I know enough to know

All politicians

Are basically the same

At a certain level

They seem to only seek approval

Call me jaded

I can take it

I didn’t rejoice when Donald Trump got elected

Although I was glad Hillary Clinton did not

I believe history

If we survive that long

Will show her and her husband

To be the very serpents

They accused

Preying on the defenseless

And picking off anyone who got in their way

At any rate

My disdain for the majority of politicians aside

I am not a Democrat

Not a Republican

Not a Libertarian

I am first and foremost

A Mother

And a citizen of this country

My family are all immigrants

As everyone’s are

On both sides

Hailing from Greece

Czechoslovakia

Britain and Scotland

They all came here for the opportunity of America

Some came to escape the Nazis

They all however

Became Americans

Loved this country

Flew the flag

Outside their houses

But what does that mean

Anymore

Our government is

And likely has been

By all accounts

Pretty horribly corrupt

Maybe from it's inception

We have protected the world

We have won wars

Been noble

We have also taken what wasn’t ours

Been greedy and capricious

With the blood of our own people

Let alone

The blood of anyone else

We have believed our own press

Abused the innocent

Left them unprotected

Yet

I still love America

I grew up in the South

Patriotism is a thing down here

I have the deepest respect and gratitude

For all our service women and men

And for those they leave behind

When they go to face the darkness

I have travelled the world

But I am still

Always so relieved to be back on American soil

I have never been ashamed to be from America

I’m still not

Because I believe the vast majority of the people in this country

Are good

They are just not heard

Or they are too busy hating each other

For shit that doesn't matter

Or they have been lulled to sleep

I believe the Government should exist for very little

Like C.S. Lewis

I consider it to be

A necessary evil

It should service the roadways

Enforce the laws

That are voted in by the people

It should protect the borders

From all threats

Foreign and Domestic

It seems now

Our greatest threat

Is ourselves

Now we get down to the point of this post

I believe in protecting the borders

I believe that people should be in our Country legally

I am also aware

That the system for doing that

Is far from functioning at it’s best

But

Before I’m an American

Before I give any shits about immigration

I am first

And most violently

A Mother

A Mother who is fucking outraged

If I lived in terrifying conditions

Conditions that I deemed to be unsafe

I would stop at nothing

NOTHING

To get my daughters to safety

I would seek asylum

AND SO WOULD YOU

I don’t know all that is wrong with the world

I don’t know how to begin to fix it

I know a pretty great place to start

Is to not tear children away from their parents

What a terrible atrocity

To even think

To transgress that sacred bond

Try it with a Mother bear

Or lion

See how well you fare

I’m not saying Hand out free college

And welfare checks

I think charity is the business of us

The population

It should be voluntary

Not deducted from our tax dollars

Those are other battles

But keeping children with their parents

Shouldn’t even be a question

Our morality as a nation

As human beings

Should not hesitate on that point

For even a second

There should be no disagreement anywhere

From anyone

As the Father to my own children said

“It’s just plain evil.”

I say

It’s unnecessary roughness

Cruel in a way that boggles the mind

Cruel in a way

That will either keep you complacent

Or make you mad as Hell

Whatever your opinion on the parents

Or why they did what they did

Although I defy any parent to say

They would not do the same to save their own

Whatever your opinions on the borders of this country

Or immigration

Children don’t deserve to suffer this injustice

They will grow up scarred

Vengeful

Hating this country

And with good reason

We have worked hard it seems

To earn it

Religion doesn’t matter here

It should never matter in the governing process

Common human decency should matter

That type of charity

Knows no borders

If puppies were being stolen from their mothers

And held in a craptastic abandoned Wal-Mart

People would be marching with fire in the streets

When I think of the madness I would suffer

The insanity inducing pain I would feel

If I was so separated from my children

It makes me literally ill

Maybe that’s the problem with the world

We always wait to act

Until it’s our own

By then

It’s usually too late

So make a call

Make a march

Write a letter

Donate some dollars

Do whatever you can

To make your voice heard

If you’re a person of importance

With millions of dollars

And a giant platform at your disposal

GET TO WORK MOTHER FUCKER

Your position has maybe been given to you

For such a time as this

If you are like me

Sort of small and unimportant

Be your Hobbit self

Do what you must

Do all that you can

To help change the world

To rescue the lost "Penny's"

The message in the bottle

Is for you and me

One day

Those children may be your own
